The Río Pacual is an approximately 65 km long left tributary of the Río Guáitara in the Departamento de Nariño in southwestern Colombia .

River course

The Río Pacual rises on the northern flank of the 4070  m high Azufral volcano , in the south of the Colombian western cordillera . The Río Pacual initially flows in a north-northeast direction along the eastern flank of the Western Cordillera. From river kilometer 47, the trunk road I-17 ( Túquerres - Los Andes ) follows the course of the river to the town of Samaniego , which is 30 km above the mouth. For the last 14 kilometers, the river turns northeast. Finally, the Río Pacual flows 5 km east-northeast of Sotomayor into the Río Guáitara, 12 km above its mouth into the Río Patía .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Río Pacual covers about 560 km². It is on the eastern flank of the Western Cordillera. In the extreme south is the Azufral volcano. In the east, the catchment area is separated from the river valley of the Río Guáitara by a mountain ridge up to 2738  m high.
