Römer (Erfurt)

The Roman

The Römer is a statue in the shape of a Roman warrior on the fish market in Erfurt , directly opposite the Erfurt town hall . The statue is of a Roman warrior armed from head to toe with the insignia of the Roman Republic, who holds the city flag of Erfurt in his right hand.

From 1448 there was a statue of St. Martin in Erfurt , which was associated with the adjacent Martinikirche . Saint Martin is the patron saint of the city of Mainz , the Mainz Cathedral and the diocese of Mainz , whose archbishop was formally the city lord. So the patron was transferred to Erfurt itself. The statue was torn down during a revolt against Kurmainz during the Peasants' War in 1525 at the behest of the senior councilor.

The Archbishop of Kurmainz pushed for a new figure of Martin to be erected. The city council commissioned the resident Dutchman Israel von der Milla , who created the statue "Man on the Pillar". It was set up on November 6th, 1591 in front of the house at the Breiten Herd and was mostly just called "Mann" or "Römer" by the Erfurters. The statue was gradually given a similar meaning to a Roland , which is why it was increasingly referred to as a Roland . It was not until the 20th century that people returned to their original meaning and deleted the Roman from the list of Rolande .

The current base dates from the 18th century. In 1886 the Römer came to its current location.

At the time of the fall of the Wall , the Roman was in urgent need of restoration. In 1991/92 both the statue and the column were treated with stone conservation, some plastic parts, flag and sword scabbard replaced. The figure was also given the color scheme from the Renaissance period. Previously, the Romans had taken on a dark gray color due to harmful environmental factors. The stonemason company Ochsenfurt from Paderborn, which was already active at the cathedral, sponsored the renovation by the conservators Reinhard and Stemmler with over DM 30,000.
