The R-108 is a Soviet tour radio that was produced in large numbers from 1957. In addition to the Soviet Army , numerous other armed forces, but also paramilitary and civil organizations, used this radio device. The structure and controls correspond to the R-105 and R-109 radios ; the R-108 differs from these mainly in the usable frequency range .

The R-108 is used to transmit voice information. It uses narrowband frequency modulation (FM) as the type of modulation . The device may be continuous in the frequency range from 28 MHz to 36.5 MHz tuned to. In addition to being used as a terminal device, it can also be used as a relay station .

The further development R-108M differs from the original version R-108D by a changed arrangement of the operating elements and above all by reduced dimensions and weight, but the achievable range also decreased. The radio can be used in motion, carried by a person, stationary or in vehicles scaffolded. The device can be remotely controlled with appropriate headsets or field telephones such as the TA-57 .

user

The R-108 and R-108M were used in many command vehicles and radio sets. With the export of these vehicles, the radio also found its way into numerous other armed forces. In addition, paramilitary organizations such as the Society for Sport and Technology of the GDR or the Soviet DOSAAF used the radio for pre-military training.

Power is supplied with nickel-cadmium batteries with a nominal voltage of 4.8  V . The battery types 2NKN-24 (2НКН-24) or 2NKN-32 (2КН-32) are used. There are two battery sets for each device. With a ratio between transmit and receive mode of 3: 1, the maximum operating time is between 12 and 17.5 hours, depending on the type of battery used. With the R-108M, one N-14 (Н-14) battery or two 2NKP20 (2НКП-20) or 2NKP-24 (2НКП-24) batteries were used with the same nominal voltage. This extended the operating time to 12 to 21 hours.

The UM-2 power amplifier (усилитель мощности) can be connected to the R-108M to increase the range. Constructed in the same housing as the R-108M, it has a transmission power of 10  W .

Trivia

Because of the narrow-band frequency modulation and the appropriate frequency range, which covers the 10-meter band , the device can be used directly by radio amateurs without technical modifications.
