Hugo Emanuel Becher (born February 28, 1871 in Leipzig , Kingdom of Saxony , † September 19, 1942 in Munich ) was a German academic sculptor , medalist and mouleur.

Life

Hugo Becher was born as the son of Gustav Becher, a uniform supplier, and Maria Becher, b. Schmidt, born in Leipzig. He received his basic sculptural training in Rome . In 1891 he began studying at the Munich Art Academy and was a student of Wilhelm von Rümann . From 1893 to 1897 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy and was a master student of Robert Diez . This was followed by studies at the private Julian Academy in Paris . In 1898 he received an award from the Salon des artistes français in Paris . In 1899 he received the great gold medal of honor from the Dresden Art Academy. During this time he lived and worked in the Dresden Künstlerhaus in Loschwitz . By 1904 he was already working as a freelancer in Munich. He became a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative and from 1901 had already exhibited his works regularly in exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace . He was a member of the Masonic lodges Balduin zur Linde in Leipzig and Zurkette in Munich. In 1942 he took part in the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich. He mainly created medals , plaques , portrait busts and small sculptures. For the Saxon porcelain factory Fraureuth , he made animal models and templates as well as genre scenes. Among other things, the figure of a love goddess Venus as a female nude, a rhesus monkey and a pair of angora goats have been handed down . He later supplied moulages for the scientific institutes in Germany . His detailed and highly precise medical demonstration models are in various university collections. In Munich he ran a company for the production of moulages; he signed this with the inscription fa. HE Becher, Munich .
