The RATP series MI 09 refers to electric multiple units that were ordered by the Régie autonome des transports Parisiens (RATP) in 2009 to replace the MI 84 series on line A of the Réseau express régional d'Île-de-France (RER). The designation MI stands for materiel d'interconnexion , i.e. throughbinding material, whereby the throughbinding refers to the through traffic on the different electrified routes of RATP and SNCF . The first train of the pilot series was taken over for test drives in 2010; the passenger service, originally planned for autumn 2011, began on December 5, 2011. In June 2012, the RATP redeemed an option for additional trains that will now also replace the MS 61 series .

history

Political discussion about the congestion of the RER A

A train in La Défense station .

With around 1.2 million passengers a day, the RER A is one of the most frequently used rail connections in the world. Trains are often overcrowded and delayed. On April 11, 2008, the RATP presented a plan to improve punctuality, which, in addition to short-term operational measures, also included the acquisition of new double-decker trains in the medium term.

Following the proposals of the RATP, the UMP members of the regional council of the Île-de-France asked on May 19, 2008 the president of the regional council Jean-Paul Huchon to provide the financial means necessary to deal with the problems of the RER A overload to solve. The syndicat des transports d'Île-de-France (STIF) must financially support the RATP's plans to generally use double-deck cars.

The question of modernizing the RER led to political conflicts between French President Nicolas Sarkozy (UMP) and the regional government of Jean-Paul Huchon ( PS ). On May 20, in a speech on environmental policy in Orléans , Sarkozy announced that he would not allow “fruitless opposition” and “political squabbles” at local level to prevent necessary investments. The French state would take the lead on this issue if necessary. Huchon called the president's announcement a “political maneuver” that the French state was “the only shareholder in the RATP”.

On May 27, 2008, Sarkozy announced on the RTL radio station that the RATP would provide 250 to 300 million euros for the modernization of the RER A, in particular for the purchase of new vehicles. He called on STIF to "do its part" and provide the same amount so that modernization work could start soon, new vehicles would be ordered and all passengers could benefit from them in twelve years. Huchon announced on the same day that "the STIF, the local authorities and the region will of course contribute their 50%, as we generally do with local transport."

Following these announcements, the RATP Board of Directors commissioned its President Pierre Mongin on June 27, 2008 to take the necessary steps to operate the RER A continuously with double-decker cars and thereby increase capacity by a total of 30%. Costs of 600 million euros were budgeted for the acquisition of 30 trains, which RATP and STIF should bear in equal parts.

Order and production

Test drives of an MI 09 in September 2011.

On April 8, 2009, a firm order for 60 units - a train consists of one (short train) or two units (long train) - for 917 million euros, 30% of which was carried by the STIF, was announced. The first train should be delivered at the end of 2010, and from mid-2011 a train should come into passenger traffic every month. The contract also contained an option for 104 additional units and thus had a total volume of 2.5 billion euros. Ultimately, this should increase the capacity of Line A by 30%.

A consortium of Alstom and Bombardier , which had already built the MI 2N Altéo trains, was awarded the contract. Alstom had a share of around 70% of the value of the order, which corresponds to 640 million euros.

Numerous Alstom factories in France were involved in the manufacture of the trains: Valenciennes , Le Creusot (bogies), Ornans (drive), Tarbes and Villeurbanne . The end cars were assembled in Valenciennes, and the intermediate cars in the Bombardier factory in Crespin (north) .

The first MI 09 was delivered at the end of 2010, and in January 2011 it was presented to the public in the presence of Huchon. The first use in passenger traffic followed on December 5, 2011 in the presence of President Sarkozy.

Redeemed options

At the end of June 2012, RATP exercised part of the option and ordered 70 additional train units. These are to replace the single-decker trains of the MS 61 series , the first of which were already in use in 1967. An order for an additional 10 trains was approved by STIF in January 2015. Delivery of the total of 140 trains, all planned for the RER A, is expected by the end of 2017.

commitment

The units of the MI 09 series are used exclusively on the RER A, where they can be used equally on the RATP and SNCF routes, which have different power systems. Here it mainly serves the connections from Marne-la-Vallée - Chessy in the east to the western endpoints Cergy-le-Haut and Poissy . Occasionally there are also operations on the other branches of the route.

Vehicle concept

The trains of the MI 09 series have particularly wide doors (2 meters) to enable quick passenger changes. This enables the same stopping times in the stations as with the previous MI 84, although up to 55% more passengers can be carried: 2600 passengers (including 948 seats) versus 1684 (including 432 seats).

The trains are equipped with the RER A system for driver's cab signaling système d'aide à la conduite, à l'exploitation et à la maintenance (system to help with control, operation and maintenance), which is installed on the main line between the Nanterre -Préfecture stations and Vincennes allows a dense train sequence. The trains can be coupled and multi-controlled with those of the older double-decker series MI 2N Altéo.

The units are dual-system capable for 1.5 kV direct and 25 kV alternating voltage due to the route supplied with different voltages .

In the passenger compartment, the trains are monitored by video and equipped with 19-inch LCD screens, which inform passengers about the train route, the next stop and the connections. The trains still have ventilation refrigérée (cooled ventilation), but no full air conditioning.
