From 1971 to 1978 he worked in the ministries of finance and labor and social affairs before becoming deputy mayor of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine under Michel Rocard in 1977 , whom he followed as mayor in 1994 . In addition, from 1985 Huchon worked for a year as director of the “Caisse Nationale” of the Crédit Agricole . When Edouard Balladur's bank was privatized, he was fired with the words "I've never heard your name". When Rocard became minister in 1981 and prime minister in 1988, Huchon succeeded him as his cabinet director and remained in that capacity until 1991. There followed a few years in which he worked in the private sector, mainly together with François Pinault and as Vice President of the headhunting firm Progress Associés.

Huchon is assigned to the more pragmatic, social-democratic wing of the party. In an interview with Figaro in 2008, he called on the PS to break with the “Marxist doctrine”.

In the 2010 regional council elections, the PS and its coalition partners again won a majority and their top candidate was re-elected.
