RIAS 2 was a radio program from West Berlin . It was set up on November 1, 1953 by radio in the American sector (RIAS) as a second radio program alongside RIAS 1 and broadcast on medium wave and VHF via transmitters in Berlin-Britz and Hof . The medium-wave broadcasts were overlaid by jammers stationed in the GDR until 1978 .

On September 30, 1985, RIAS 2 became a 24-hour youth program (jingle: RIAS 2 - typically Berlin ). Looking back, the Berliner Zeitung speaks of a brilliant start. “In West Berlin alone, RIAS 2 immediately reached 300,000 listeners per average hour.” RIAS 2 was also popular in East Berlin and the GDR. "For many people from Eastern Europe, the West channel was a part of life like broilers and club coke ."

The RIAS meeting point (jingle: switch on your radio, because the meeting point is your turn ) was legendary with its mixture of critical information and music. The recording request programs on Saturday were particularly popular, in which the moderators played all the titles and did not speak into them. Well-known RIAS-2 moderators include Christoph Lanz , Andreas Dorfmann , Christine Westermann , Elmar Hörig , Gregor Rottschalk , Irina von Bentheim and Rik De Lisle . The station also made history with the loose series Rock over RIAS , a multi-night music marathon that was broadcast between 1975 and 1984, mostly between Christmas and New Year, and was partly taken over by other stations (e.g. NDR). Several presenters (veterans were Barry Graves , Olaf Leitner and Walter Bachauer; this was followed by Burghard Rausch , Christian Graf and Uwe Wohlmacher , among others ) divided the 4 to 6 hour programs according to musical styles and played music "to record". According to information, empty cassettes were always sold out in the GDR during the Rock-over-RIAS era.

On June 1, 1992, RIAS 2 was privatized. The successor station rs2 took over the Berlin frequency 94.3 MHz at the time, but could no longer achieve the same popularity as RIAS 2.
