history
The Germania was founded in 1905 and is the oldest rechtsrheinische rowing club in Cologne. In 1914 the foundation stone of the first boathouse, designed by Wilhelm Riphahn , was laid on Poller Wiesen . Since 1926, which is Germania also active in tennis and now has six tennis courts .
Germania celebrated its first successes in rowing in 1922 and 1923 with second place in the German championships in two and four without a helmsman. The most important performers in the inter-war period were the two brothers Fritz and Willy Wildeshaus. A lively sporting rivalry also developed with the Cologne RV 1877 and the Cologne RG 1891 , the oldest rowing clubs in Cologne , located in the Rodenkirchen district on the left bank of the Rhine .
After the end of the Second World War , Germania initially got into dire straits. The neat boathouse had fallen victim to a bomb attack and was only renovated in 1964 using a modern design. Nevertheless, thanks to the participation of individual members in European and World Championships, sporting successes were achieved again. In 1971 Peter Lange became his German champion in lightweight and between 1972 and 1981, Germania achieved numerous podium places at German championships in lightweight eighth, double sculls and double sculls. Notable performers during this time were Helmut Latz , Norbert Kothe and Helmut Wolber. In 1976, the joint lightweight eight with rowers from Germania , Cologne RV 1877 and RC Tegel 1886 also won the gold medal at the World Championships in Villach .
In addition to competitive sports, Germania is increasingly concentrating on activities in popular sports. In 1986 she won the coveted Georg Winsauer Prize for her achievements in touring rowing in the same year . As a member of the Cologne Regatta Association , the rowing club also takes part in competitions such as the city eight and the Cologne four . Matinees are also held in the expanded boathouse and a restaurant with a sun terrace is operated.
