Rachael Cohen

Rachael Cohen (* around 1990) is a British musician ( alto saxophone , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Cohen comes from the Shetland Islands and began her musical training on the piano at the age of four. Five years later she switched to the saxophone and engaged in improvisation at an early age. When she was twelve, her family moved from the Shetlands to Edinburgh, where they attended the Edinburgh City Music School. There she studied with Martin Kershaw and the pianist Lynda Cochrane . In the following years played Cohen alto saxophone in both the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and in the Youth Jazz Orchestra of Tommy Smith ; she also worked with Joe Locke , Arild Andersen , Michael Janisch , Ryan Quigley and Mark Bassy and Mark Lockheart . She has also made guest appearances at the jazz festivals in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London as well as at the IAJE convention in Toronto.

In 2006 Cohen received a scholarship to study jazz at the Birmingham Conservatoire , where she studied with Julian Siegel , Jean Toussaint , Mike Williams, Hans Koller and Tony Levin . She also played on her local engagements with Dave Holland , George Garzone , Lee Konitz , Donny McCaslin , Ingrid Laubrock , Larry Grenadier and Jon Irabagon . As lead alto saxophonist, she has worked in a number of big band projects by international artists such as John Hollenbeck and Mike Gibbs . In 2012, Rachael Cohen recorded her critically acclaimed debut album, Halftime , which was released on Whirlwind Recordings ; MOJO magazine wrote: “ A seductive, undiluted chamber jazz atmosphere in which Cohen dances with articulation and wit about her own unpredictable chord structures and elegantly combines Desmond's coolness, Konitz's quirk and Coleman's lyrical astringency . “In 2020 Cohen led a quartet with Conor Chaplin (bass), Tom Cawley (piano) and the French drummer Marc Michel.
