Rachel Kushner (born 1968 in Eugene, Oregon ) is an American writer.

Life

Rachel Kushner's parents were from New York and moved around in the trailer with her and then moved to San Francisco in 1979 , where she grew up. When she was eighteen she went to Florence as an exchange student . She did a quick degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley , wasted time, was part of a motorcycle gang, and rode a 500 Moto Guzzi . In 2001, she received an MFA in literature and creative writing from Columbia University . She worked in New York City as an editor for the literary magazine Grand Street and wrote for the magazine Bomb . Since then she has been the editor of Soft Targets magazine .

Her stories and essays appear in New Yorker , Harper’s , New York Times and Paris Review . Her first two novels Telex from Cuba (2008) and The Flamethrowers (2013) were each nominated for a National Book Award . In 2013 she received a Guggenheim scholarship . With her novel The Mars Room , Kushner was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2018 , and the French translation of the novel ( Le Mars Club ) was awarded the Prix ​​Médicis étranger in 2018 .

Kushner lives in Los Angeles , her husband works at the Art Center College of Design , they have a son.
