Paschasius Radbertus , also called Ratpert or Ratbert von Corbie , (* around 785, † around 865) was a Franconian Benedictine monk , Abbot of Corbie and author of numerous theological writings. He is a saint of the Catholic Church, and his feast day is April 26th.

Life

Corbie Abbey

The news about his life is sparse. They can be found scattered in allusions in his own works, as well as in a poem of praise by his pupil, the Bishop Engelmodus of Soissons . A vita from the 12th or 13th century is of little historical value.

Paschasius ("the Easter one") was raised as an orphan in the Soissons nunnery. Around the year 812 he entered the Corbie monastery. He was on friendly terms with the abbots Adalhard and Wala and wrote their vitae. In 844 he became abbot of Corbie himself, but resigned from his office around 851 and retired to the monastery of Saint-Riquier .

According to recent research ( Klaus Zechiel-Eckes ), Paschasius Radbertus could be one of the authors of the pseudoisidoric decretals .
