Radio Xanadu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Xanadu was a Munich radio station and was one of the first private broadcasters in Germany.

Xanadu was founded in 1984 by private radio pioneer Jo Lüders and was allowed to go on air in 1984 as part of the Munich cable pilot project. From 1985 onwards the frequency 92.4 was shared with the providers M1, Radio Aktiv and Radio 44 . From April 18, 1988, the station had its own frequency under the name Radio Xanadu - Citywelle 93.3 . Shareholders were u. a. the film dealer Herbert Kloiber ( Tele München ), the Ferency and Conrad families and the private equity investor Eugen von Keller (Xanadu Mediengesellschaft). The moderator team included u. a. Stevie Höper, Susanne Rohrer and Fred Kogel . Günther Löffler was the sole managing director of the startup company from mid-1988 to early 1993.

On February 18, 1991, the pop channel was transformed into Xanadu Classic Rock under the program management of Thomas Gottschalk . His former Bayern 3 colleague Benny Schnier changed the direction of the station to a rock-heavy music format that was already tried and tested in the USA. The permanent on-air team included radio hosts Dominik Schott, Armand Presser, Jan Plate, Frank Stängle, Daniel Kovac , Nina Breiter and Chris Boettcher . Celebrities who were friends with Gottschalk, such as Fritz Egner , Frank Laufenberg , Gundis Zámbó , Ottfried Fischer , Jochen Busse and Günther Jauch as well as the long-time BR moderator Werner Götze were regularly at the microphone as guest moderators .

In addition to the rock music, extensive local reporting played a major role. Word-heavy journalism like the evening TalkRadio or cult programs like the Sunday breakfast with the Beatles attracted a lot of attention. The commercial success, however, remained relatively modest. In 1993 the French NRJ group acquired the majority stake and renamed the station Energy Munich .

Merger with Radio 44

From the beginning of 1985, Radio 44 also took part in the Munich cable pilot project. Involved in the channels was among other things, the new Constantin Film . The name Radio 44 referred to the headquarters of the broadcasting studio at Schellingstrasse 44, the rear building of Neue Constantin Film. Fred Kogel was the program director and one of the moderators . Radio 44 broadcast the program Startschuss every morning from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. on frequency 92.4 . A short time later, the station merged with Radio Xanadu.
