history

Schorrentin village church, view from the south with chapel extensions

According to an inscription on the south facade of the church, the nave of the church in Schorrentin was completed in 1390. Since the place was mentioned for the first time almost 100 years earlier, the church building probably replaced an older predecessor building. The cemetery was once located around the hilltop church. The bell tower was originally a wooden construction, which was destroyed by a storm in 1760 and replaced by a massive new building in 1767, which was crowned today in 1811.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the church in 1890, the church was extensively renovated and the furnishings were almost completely renewed. In 1950 there was another painting. In 1952 the organ from the 19th century was overhauled, in 1955 three new chilled iron bells were hung in the bell cage. In the 1970s and 1990s, renewed renovations took place, with the tower and the roof structure being renovated in particular.

Schorrentin once had its own parish , which was also responsible for Kämmerich , Schönkamp , Groß Markow , Lelkendorf , Warsow , Sarmstorf and Schwarzenhof . However, the parish has been vacant since 1980 and was closed in the 1990s. It is looked after by the Neukalen parish. Services are held in the Schorrentin village church every four weeks on the second Sunday of the month and on religious holidays. They are only visited by a small number of believers during normal services, so the congregation is considering converting the southern extensions (crypt and chapel) into a room that can be used as a winter church for services in winter and for the rest of the year tourist purposes is available. The nave will then continue to be available as a space for church services and cultural events.

Building description

View of the choir room

The village church Schorrentin is located on a hill in the center of Schorrentin. The building is a right-angled early Gothic brick building with a drawn-in choir room facing east. The nave and choir are covered with a flat ceiling, although existing buttresses indicate a planned or previously existing vault. The east gable has rich frieze and panel decoration, which continues on the choir and in the nave. Most of the windows are pointed arch, although there is also a window with an almost round arch on the east gable.

On the west side of the nave there is an organ gallery with a historic church organ. A sacristy is attached to the north side of the choir , and a solid brick burial chapel of the formerly lordly von Levetzow family (local ownership 1366 to 1780) and a half-timbered chapel were added to the south side of the nave . The west tower, which was added in the 18th century, has a square floor plan with a four-sided helmet and an eight-sided lantern .

Most of the interior decoration dates back to the 19th century. The altarpiece by the painter Heinrich Pommerencke depicts Christ on the Mount of Olives and dates back to 1865. The pulpit, baptismal stands, stalls and pavement were renewed in 1890 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the church.

To the west of the church is the classicistic mausoleum of the Viereck family (local property from 1824) with its distinctive columned portal, which is, however, very dilapidated.
