Life

Coming from a poor background, Heinrich Pommerencke initially trained as a room painter in Schwerin and worked in this profession there and later in Berlin. After initially self-taught as a painter, he studied from 1848 to 1851 at the Berlin Art Academy. When he returned to Schwerin, he was able to go back to Berlin for further studies under Carl Joseph Begas with the help of a grant from Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . From 1851 to 1854 studies followed in the studio of the history painter Ary Scheffer in Paris. After a trip to Italy, which took him to Rome in 1854, he returned to his homeland.

Here he established himself as a portrait and history painter, carrying out numerous commissions from the Grand Duke and his family as well as from the area around the court. His portraits were also popular with the bourgeoisie in northern Germany. He lived with his family in a house in the Schwerin Schelfstadt .

The State Museum Schwerin owns 28 paintings by Pommerencke, of which 25 are portraits; more are in the Rostock Cultural History Museum .
