Rafael Bello Ruiz

Rafael Bello Ruiz (born March 7, 1926 in Tecpan de Galeana , Mexico ; † July 6, 2008 ) was a Roman Catholic bishop from 1976 to 2001 , then Archbishop of Acapulco .

Life

Rafael Bello Ruiz studied anthropology , Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Chilapa, the Pontifical Seminary of Montezuma, New Mexico, USA, at the Pontifical University of Comillas in Spain and in Paris.

He received on 29 June 1950 aged 24 by Maurice Cardinal Feltin the priesthood in the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris . He then studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and received a doctorate in canon law . From 1955 to 1958 he taught at the seminary in Chilapa and was its Spiritus Rector. From 1959 to 1969 he was Rector of the Seminary of the Diocese of Acapulco.

On February 12, 1974, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Segia and auxiliary bishop in Acapulco. He was ordained bishop on March 25, 1974 by the Apostolic Delegate in Mexico, Mario Pio Gaspari ; Co- consecrators were Fidel Cortés Pérez , Bishop of Chilapa , and José del Pilar Quezada Valdéz , Bishop of Acapulco.

On June 1, 1976 he was by Paul VI. appointed second Bishop of Acapulco and on February 10, 1983 by Pope John Paul II as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Acapulco.

Bello Ruiz was appointed by the Mexican Bishops' Conference (EMV) to chair the Committee on Migration and Tourism (1980–1986) and was a member of the Episcopal Commission for Laity and Permanent Deacons (1986–1991).

On May 8, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation after 25 years in office and appointed Felipe Aguirre Franco as his successor.
