Rafael "Rafi" Peretz (born January 7, 1956 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli military chaplain , Orthodox rabbi , brigadier general and politician of the national-religious party HaBajit haJehudi . In June 2019, Peretz became Minister of Education in the Benjamin Netanyahu IV cabinet . In the cabinet of Benjamin Netanyahu V , which was formed in May 2020, he took over the Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs .

Life

Peretz is the son of Moroccan - Jewish immigrants. He completed a military career in Israel and rose to the position of brigadier general in the Israeli armed forces . He is a Jewish military chaplain in the Israeli armed forces as an Orthodox rabbi. Peretz is chairman of the HaBajit haJehudi party and the Union of Right-wing Parties .

As early as 2014, before his time as minister, he made headlines with the statement that the Temple Mount was of minor importance for Muslims, since Jerusalem was not mentioned in the Koran , which most Muslims would not have read anyway. Peretz believes that the Palestinian territories should be fully annexed. He considered homosexuality to be treatable until July 18, 2019. Due to violent protests and the refusal of the Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel to say goodbye to the Israeli ambassador in Luxembourg, Peretz declared that he firmly rejects conversion therapies .

Like Schmuel Sackett before him, Rafael Peretz describes the impact of interreligious marriages on Judaism as the “second Holocaust ” in a cabinet meeting . He was referring to a study by the Jerusalem Institute for the Politics of the Jewish People (JPPI). The report says that US Jews are currently marrying the majority of non-Jews.

Peretz sees it as one of his goals to provide every child in Israel with a Hebrew Bible .

Peretz is married and has twelve children.
