Rafid Ahmed Alwan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rafid Ahmed Alwan or Rafid Ahmed Alwan El Dschanabi ( Arabic رافد أحمد علوان الجنابي, DMG Rāfid Aḥmad ʿAlwān ) or Rafed Aljanabi , also known under the pseudonym Curveball , is a German citizen of Iraqi origin. After arriving in Germany in 1999, he claimed to have been involved in Iraqi programs to develop weapons of mass destruction .

background

Alwan came to Germany in 1999 and applied for asylum . Here the engineer spoke to the BND . He stated that he was an expert in chemical warfare agents and the director of a plant for their production in Djerf al Nadaf. He also talked about mobile systems for the production of chemical warfare agents. He refused to talk to American intelligence.

The statements Alwan to the alleged weapons of mass destruction were the Bush administration as a justification for the Iraq war used and its statements of US Secretary of State Colin Powell before the UN Security Council cited as evidence of illicit weapons programs of Baghdad. The then European chief of the CIA Tyler Drumheller claims that he had previously warned CIA chief George Tenet about the unreliability of the source.

Gunter Pleuger , former ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations, confirmed that the information originally came from Germany. There was no official warning from his side that the information might not be correct. In 2011, the former BND boss August Hanning accused the US of having "misused the BND to justify the Iraq war". Several former high-ranking BND officials confirmed that they had warned the CIA several times on various channels not to rely on Curveball's statements . Hanning even formulated his concerns in a letter to Tenet.

Alwan was classified as an unreliable source in a Burn Notice after numerous warnings, including from the Federal Intelligence Service . In the press he was u. a. referred to as "the man who lied the world into a war". In 2011, Rafid Ahmed Alwan El-Dschanabi, who had supplied the Federal Intelligence Service with the information about alleged biological weapons and secret mass destruction facilities under the code name Curveball , confessed to the British Guardian that his statements on this were a lie. El-Janabi based his lies on the fact that he had the chance to "fabricate something to overthrow the regime".

Later life in Germany

Alwan has officially been working as a freelance worker for an alleged front company of the BND since January 1, 2001 . His real name was revealed in November 2007. The employment contract was terminated at the end of 2008. Alwan sued against it before the labor court in Munich .
