Rahewin

Rahewin (* unknown; † before 1177) was the scribe and notary of Bishop Otto von Freising and is best known for his continuation of Otto's actions by Friedrich .

life and work

Not much is known about his origins and youth, possibly he came from Freising , which he calls patria mea . In 1144 he is mentioned for the first time as cartularius (document writer ) of Bishop Otto von Freising. Other documents name him capellanus and notarius , from 1156 also canonicus ( canon ) of the Freising Cathedral . He is mentioned in numerous documents as a scribe or witness, with the most varied spellings of his name occurring: Ragewinus, Radevicus, Reguinus, Rachwynus and many others.

According to Otto von Freising's dictation, Rahewin wrote the Chronica sive Historia de duabus civitatibus and presented it to Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa together with Abbot Rapoto von Weihenstephan in 1157 . He accompanied Otto von Freising on his travels and was also present when he died in the Cistercian Abbey of Morimond in September 1158. Otto commissioned Rahewin to finish his unfinished work on the deeds of Emperor Frederick, the Gesta Friderici seu Cronica . Rahewin presumably brought the news of Otto's death to the emperor, and the emperor confirmed the order.

Rahewin wrote Books III and IV of Frederick's Deeds , which he completed in 1160. He describes events in the period from August 1157 ( Frederick's campaign against Poland ) to February 1160 ( Synod in Pavia , in which the schism between Pope Alexander III and antipope Viktor IV should be resolved).

He also wrote Latin poems, including a several hundred verse version of the prosaic Theophilus legend of Paul the deacon in rhymed hexameters and a Flosculus Rahewini ad H. praepositum. Two grave inscriptions for Otto are included in Friedrich's deeds , one of them in vagant stanzas and the other in rhymed hexameters.

After 1160 there is little news about Rahewin. Two documents for the Schäftlarn monastery from 1168 and 1170 name him provost of St. Veit . In 1177 a Konrad is handed down as provost of St. Veit, so that Rahewin had probably died earlier.
