action

Manoj has no income and comes to Kolkata from Bhagalpur in Bihar . With the help of his friend Alok, a producer of television series, and his wife Shila, with whom he is staying, he wants to ask former school friends for financial support for his planned independence. After successfully visiting some of his friends, he also wants to meet his ex-fiancée Niru, who separated from him for marriage to a richer man.

In the pouring rain with a raincoat borrowed from Shila, he goes to her. Only after a long ring does she open and a long conversation unfolds, while the Niru talks about her successful husband and her bored housewife life in luxury. Manoj also portrays himself as successful towards her, making use of the life situation of his friend Alok and acting as a television series producer.

When Niru goes out with Manoj's raincoat to get Manoj some food, he opens the shutters and lets a man into the apartment who finally turns out to be the landlord. He tells Manoj that Niru and her husband have owed the rent for months and are about to be sacked. They are completely impoverished and the entire home furnishings belong to a furniture company to which they have sublet the living room for storing furniture. Manoj is shocked. With the money he collected from his friends, he pays 12,000 rupees, three months' rent for Niru and asks for leniency for them.

Even after Niru is back, they both continue to lie about their life situation. Manoj leaves her a message that he has paid the rent. The next day Shila gives Manoj an envelope that she found in the raincoat. Niru gave him her gold bracelets because she found Manoj's letter of appeal to his friends in a raincoat.

Remarks

Raincoat is Rituparno Ghosh's first film in Hindi. It is a free adaptation of the short story The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry .

Manoj's memories of the time together with Niru are shown in flashbacks. These are shot in bright, lively colors and stand in stark contrast to the gray-tones scenes in Niru's apartment.

The chamber play-like film drama does not contain any dance scenes typical of Bollywood entertainment films.
