Rainer Schnelle

Rainer Schnelle (* 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German jazz musician ( piano ).

Schnell is a son of Eberhard Schnelle and his wife Telse Schnelle-Cölln and a cousin of Thomas Schnelle . After graduating from high school in 1970 he was an organist in the bands Amon Düül II (1972) and Atlantis (1973). In 1974 he moved to Boston, where he studied jazz at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory for a Masters degree. In 1981 he returned to Germany, where he founded his own trio with Sigi Busch and Jo Thönes .

Rainer Schnelle and his trio have played regularly with the American singer Melvin Edmondson since 2007, with whom he also made two albums; the trio also performed with Joe Gallardo and Peter Less . There were recordings with his own combos as well as with Ulrich Tukur and Hildegard Knef . He also worked with Herb Geller , Bill Ramsey , Ingrid Caven , Eberhard Weber , Evelyn Künneke and Manfred Schoof .

Since 1982, Schnelle has been teaching as a lecturer in the popular music contact course, which he co-founded, at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . For five years he traveled around the world as a pianist and musical director with Eartha Kitt . He also composed and arranged for the NDR big band , in which he occasionally appeared as a guest soloist. As the musical director of productions such as Heiße Ecke - Das St. Pauli Musical and My Fair Lady , he has also been active in the musical and theater scene in Hamburg since 2004.

In 2008 Schnelle received the culture award of the Pinneberg district .
