Rainer von Schilling

Rainer von Schilling , whose full name was Rainer Freiherr Schilling von Canstatt (born August 7, 1935 in Witten , † December 6, 2007 in Mannheim ), was a German publisher .

He was the son of Erich Zintgraff and Hella Grosse, but like his younger sister, he was adopted by the publisher Eitel-Friedrich Freiherr Schilling von Canstatt (April 1, 1904 - July 25, 1997).

Schilling began his career at Mannheimer Morgen in 1965 when his adoptive father and co-founder of the newspaper brought him into the company. From 1976 to 2004 he was editor of the newspaper . He always advocated freedom of the press and was repeatedly appointed as a media expert by UNESCO (UN special agency for education, science and culture). As President of Orbicom , he advised Unesco on the development of media structures, including in third world countries . He was also at the head of the German National Committee and on the international board of the International Press Institute in Zurich and Vienna . Schilling also actively supported the German-American friendship.

In 1970 he founded the Bloomaulorden . In 1997 Schilling was awarded the Initiative Prize, which honors personalities who are exemplary in promoting the city of Mannheim and the Rhine-Neckar region .

Schilling died at the age of 72. The Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Günther Oettinger praised von Schilling as “an extremely socially committed fellow citizen”.
