The Rajon was founded in 1927 as Krasnogwardeiski rajon ( Красногвардейский район ) and renamed to its current name in 1944. When the Pavlovsky rajon was dissolved in 1953 , parts of the Gatchinsky rajon were incorporated. From 1963 to 1965 the Lomonossowski rajon was merged with the Gatchinsky rajon. At the same time, parts of the Gatchinski rajon were incorporated into the Luschski rajon . In 1965, however, the Rajon was restored to its old borders.

The trunk road R23 (formerly M20), also European route 95, runs through the Rajon . The A180 trunk road , part of Europastrasse 20 , only runs a short distance through the Rajon.
