The Rakitnica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ракитница ) is a river in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina south of Sarajevo . It rises in the northwest of the Treskavica Mountains above the village of Rakitnica in the Trnovo municipality . Behind the village of Šabići, a canyon that is around 24 kilometers long and up to 800 meters deep begins , which is not accessible for traffic and is particularly popular with hikers and climbers. It is one of the deepest gorges in the Dinaric Mountains .
The deep Rakitnica Canyon separates the Bjelašnica mountain range in the north and Visočica in the south. Several small waterfalls cascade down from the slopes of the gorge. However, there are no major tributaries; the majority of the incoming water comes from small karst springs on the slope of the canyon.
On the northern edge of the canyon are the mountain village Lukomir, frequented by ecotourists and day-trippers, and the protected Stećci von Blace and the small mountain lake Blatačko jezero .
The Rakitnica mostly runs in a westerly to southwestern direction. About seven kilometers from the confluence with the Neretva , it turns south and flows around the 884 m high Oštro rock spur . It flows into the Neretva north of Glavatičevo .
Several organizations, including a. in Konjic and Sarajevo , campaign for the preservation of the originality of the Rakitnica Canyon and its protection against the construction of dams, roads and other infrastructure projects.
