Ralf Johannes Ferdinand Luther

Ralf Johannes Ferdinand Luther (* June 11 . Jul / 23. June  1887 greg. In Tallinn , Governorate of Estonia ; †  3. June 1931 in Tartu , Estonia ) was a Baltic German Lutheran pastor and theologian.

Life and theology

Luther was born the son of the pastor and theologian Ferdinand Justius Luther (1838–1910). His uncle was the theologian Johannes Heinrich Luther (1861–1932). He attended the elementary school in Tallinn (German Reval ) from 1896 to 1899 , then from 1899 to 1904 the grammar school named after Tsar Nicholas I (today Gustav Adolf grammar school ) in the Estonian capital. Like his father, Ralf Johannes Ferdinand Luther embarked on a theological career. From 1905 to 1910 he studied theology at the University of Tartu . In 1912 he went to Leipzig to study . He spent a year of preparation in the Lutheran parish of Nissi .

Luther was ordained in Tallinn on October 6, 1912. He was first assistant pastor in Lääne-Nigula and a year later in Mihkli ( Sankt Michaelis ). From 1914 to 1922 he was pastor of the parish of Kuusalu ( Kusal ). From 1922 until his untimely death in 1931, Luther was pastor in Tartu ( Dorpat ) in the German-speaking university community.

Luther became known for generations through his "New Testament Dictionary" (first published in 1931 by Furche-Verlag, Berlin), which is repeatedly published, most recently in 2014 under the title "Basic Words of the New Testament".
