Logos Bible Software ( English Logos Bible Software ) is a Bible software to study and exegesis of the Bible with an integrated digital library . Logos is developed by the American Faithlife Corporation . The program runs on Android , iOS , Windows , macOS and as a web application . After the logos-based German Bible program Stuttgart Electronic Study Bible was no longer developed in 2009, the German logos versions bronze and silver have been available since May 2016, another version called Gold since October 2016 and a small free German basic package has been available since June 2017 "Logos Basic" offered. Since February 2018 and the publication of the German Logos-7-Bibelsoftware, the offer has been expanded with a smaller "beginners" and a "Functions & Tools" basic package. Since October 2018, the German-language basic packages have been offered at the same time as the English-speaking ones, with the German-language offering reaching "platinum" level. The software was available with a German user interface as early as 2014 .

Functionally, the Logos Biblesoftware is a modular collection of various special tools and databases . It allows biblical texts and other ancient primary texts to be analyzed literarily, linguistically and statistically . There is also a large selection of digital specialist books such as Bible translations , dictionaries and encyclopedias . So-called "basic packages" in various price classes combine tools and libraries of various sizes.

The range of functions is broader than that of other professional Bible programs, which mostly focus on academic exegesis. Logos is also geared towards the practical needs of clergy with tools for sermon preparation, for example . Many aspects of the software are designed in such a way that laypeople can work with it without knowledge of the biblical original languages . In an "extended interlinear Bible", the biblical original text is hand-linked word for word with that of a translation, which makes it possible to analyze the original text on the basis of the translation.

A large part of the specialist literature contained is hand- tagged with thematic tags . In combination with the numerous Bible-related databases (e.g. on parallel texts, cultural concepts, events, people, places or linguistic aspects), Logos enables very detailed and targeted research in this way.

The digital catalog available for logos includes around 100,000 works in almost 40 languages from hundreds of publishers, including Brunnen Verlag , Goldschmidt Basel , CSV , the German Bible Society , EVA , Geneva Bible Society , Gütersloher Verlagshaus , Herder , Katholisches Bibelwerk , Kohlhammer , Mohr Siebeck , SCM R. Brockhaus , Theological Publishing House Zurich , Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht , Publishing House for Culture and Science and Walter de Gruyter .

In October 2014, the company behind Logos Software (then Logos Research Systems, Inc) was renamed Faithlife Corporation in response to the wider variety of products and services it offers.

history

Windows and Mac versions

Logos Bible Software was founded in 1992 by two Microsoft developers (Bob Pritchett and Kiernon Reiniger), along with Bob's father, Dale Pritchett. In 1995 Logos published the Logos Library System Platform (LLS) using data from an earlier Bible software project called the CDWordLibrary project .

After a long beta phase that began in 1999, LLS was superseded by the Libronix Digital Library System (or Libronix DLS ) in 2001 . This was a 32-bit application (LLS was 16-bit ) and was rewritten due to the modular nature that made it easier to add future enhancements. As with all other versions of the Logos Bible software, it was offered as a free update to existing customers.

Version 2 of the Libronix DLS appeared in July 2003 as Logos Bible Software Series X 2.0. It came u. a. additional support for documents such as notes and word lists, visual filters (create rules, added highlighting and flags to enable resources automatically).

Version 3 was launched in June 2006 and introduced advanced interlinear Bibles, the Bible word study tool, and syntax search. The name "Series X" has been replaced by Logos Bible Software 3. In March 2008, an alpha version of the Logos Bible software for Mac OS was released , which was then offered for sale in December. This became known as Logos Bible Software for Mac 1.0, and although it was based on the Windows version, full parity was never achieved even with versions 1.1 and 1.2, which came out in 2009.

However, on November 2, 2009, Logos Bible Software 4 was released for Windows, along with an early alpha version for Mac and a stripped-down iPhone version. Like the original release of the Libronix Digital Library System, the application was essentially rewritten and contained a completely different graphical user interface than the previous version. When the Mac version was finished, both versions of the software were almost identical in function and settings, and documents and resources could be seamlessly synchronized between the different versions. The Mac version reached beta in July 2010 and was released in September 2010 with version 4.1. Various updates later came for both platforms (October 2010, Windows only), graphics and print / export, 4.2 (December 2010 on Windows, in March 2011 on the Mac) various minor features and bug fixes , 4.3 (August 2011) "Personal Books" so that users can add their own content, 4.5 (January 2012) adding improved notes and highlighting (4.4 was skipped) and 4.6 (August 2012) with bug fixes and a few changes.

Logos Bible Software 5 was released for Mac and Windows in November 2012, with an emphasis on integrating different functions and databases to make Bible study easier and more efficient. Records and keywords were added to the Bibles, the user could now examine the roots of the words and their meaning, and the "Sermon Assistant" and the "Subject Assistant" made access to the Bible topics much easier and faster. Logos 5.1 (July 2013) added an audio reading feature and a new layout with several other minor improvements in 5.2 (November 2013).

Logos Bible Software 6 was released in late October 2014, and was the first version to support 64-bit architecture . It too has a number of new records and functions, including cross-references for Ancient Literature , "Cultural Concepts", images from original manuscripts , multimedia, and the new "Fact Book". Logos 6 also integrated sending to Amazon Kindle .

Logos Bible Software 7 was released on August 22, 2016. The version was initially only available in English, and since February 7, 2018, the Bible software has also been available in German. The Bible software has been expanded with the following functions: Sermon Editor, Course Tool, Figurative Language (interactive), Hebrew Grammatical Constructions, Longacre Genre Analysis, Sentence Types of the New Testament Dataset, Quickstart Layouts, Speech Acts, An Empty Tomb (interactive), Exploring Biblical Manuscripts.

Logos Bible Software 8 was released on October 29, 2018. This time, all foreign-language basic packages including the German were delivered at the same time as the English version. With Logos 8 the design was renewed and the performance u. a. indexing and search improved. New study aids and other tools have been integrated. The German translation of the Atlas tool u. a. has been completed and the notes have been revised.

Mobile versions

An iPhone - App was published in November 2009 in addition to logos. 4 It allows iPhone users to access most Logos resources with simple search and study functions. Resources can be accessed via the cloud or downloaded to the device for offline use. Native iPad support followed in April 2010 with version 1.4. In version 2.0 (January 2012) notes, highlighting and inline footnotes were added. The Version 3.0 (August 2012) integrated reading plans and community notes, and version 4.0 , a new user interface for iOS 7. A "themed Guide" has been added in 4.3 (June 2014) and a scroll view in 4.4 (December, 2014). The app is now available in several "flavors". In addition to the standard Logos Bible software app (in German "Bibel" or "Bibel!"), There are other apps from Faithlife Corporation, such as the Faithlife Study Bible , "Vyrso", "Verbum" and "Noet". These applications offer similar functions, different structures, and a slightly different user interface. The iOS app was awarded the "DBW Publishing Innovation Award 2011".

An Android app came out in public alpha in May 2011, with a beta in July, and version 1.0 came out a year later. The first version allowed a little more than reading logos books. The version 2.0 was quickly followed in August 2012. There were, highlighting, reading plans, "Biblical word study", the "Text section Guide" and notes split screen -view added. This brought much closer to parity with the iOS app, and future development continued in a similar fashion in the iOS version.
