Thies Gundlach

Thies Gundlach (born January 17, 1956 in Lübeck ) is a German Protestant theologian . Since December 2010 he has been one of the Vice Presidents of the EKD Church Office .

Life

Thies Gundlach studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Hamburg and Tübingen . He completed his vicariate at the St. Katharinen Church in Hamburg . From 1985 to 1988 he was a research assistant at the University of Hamburg, in the department of theology, department dogmatics, where he obtained his doctorate in 1991 with the dissertation on God's self-limitation and human autonomy: Karl Barth's church dogmatics as a step towards modernizing Protestant theology . From December 1990 he served as a pastor together with his first wife Birgitta Heubach-Gundlach at the St. Johannis Church in Hamburg-Harvestehude. From 2001 to 2010 he was senior church councilor and headed the department for church activities in the church office of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) . In October 2009, an internal paper that reached the press attracted particular attention, in which Gundlach judged the situation of the Catholic Church in Germany in sometimes harsh words.

In 2010 Gundlach became one of the three vice-presidents of the church office and has since headed the main department for Church Areas of Action and Education . He is also head of the Department for Church Areas of Action and the Faith and Dialogue Department . He is one of the leading figures behind the reform process of the EKD .

At the end of 2019, Gundlach took over the chairmanship of the Association Rescue Together , which is to act as the carrier for an evangelical initiative to send a sea rescue ship to the Mediterranean. He is co- editor of JS magazine .

Gundlach is in a relationship with the Green politician Katrin Göring-Eckardt . Gundlach has a son and a daughter from his first marriage to the Hamburg pastor Birgitta Heubach-Gundlach, a daughter of Joachim Heubach, who died in 2017 .
