Peter Schegg

Peter Johann Schegg (also Petrus Johannes Schegg ; born June 6, 1815 in Kaufbeuren ; † July 9, 1885 in Munich ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian , clergyman and university professor .

Life

Schegg, the son of a shoemaker, first attended elementary and then Latin school in Kaufbeuren. In 1827 he moved to the grammar school in Kempten , in 1832 to the Lyzeum Dillingen . In 1833 he went to the University of Munich , where he devoted himself to studying philosophy and theology until 1838 . On April 22nd, 1838 he was ordained a priest in Augsburg Cathedral . Then he was chaplain in Pfronten until 1841 . Already at this time his susceptibility to diseases became noticeable.

In 1844 Schegg moved to the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising . There he took on the benefit of the Institute of the English Misses in Berg am Laim and also the position of confessor and catechist . This position allowed him to advance his theology studies and to become active as a writer. His first publication Selected Psalms from 1843 was read by Daniel Bonifaz von Haneberg , who advised him to pursue an academic career on the basis of this work.

Schegg's subsequent efforts to pursue an academic career led to his appointment as a lecturer in biblical exegesis at the Prince-Bishop's Lyceum in Freising on March 12, 1844 . At this university, on May 21, 1847, he was appointed professor of theology with the denomination of biblical exegesis. The theological faculty of the University of Munich awarded him an honorary doctorate ( Dr. theol. Hc ) in 1855 . In 1865 he went on a trip to Palestine , which subsequently led to further publications.

On September 28, 1868, Schegg was appointed full professor of exegesis at the Theological Faculty of the University of Würzburg , and on June 11, 1872, he followed an appointment to the Theological Faculty of Munich University, where he succeeded Franz Xaver Reithmayr . Despite his health problems, his lectures were popular, he became a member of the university's senate and its rector in the academic year 1881/1882 .

With his fortune, Schegg built an orphanage in his hometown of Kaufbeuren . In 1880 he received the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael from King Ludwig . In 1868 he was appointed to the archbishop's clergy .
