Ralf Junkerjürgen

Ralf Junkerjürgen (born May 1, 1969 in Rheda-Wiedenbrück ) is a German professor of Romance studies at the University of Regensburg . His research focuses on popular culture , narratology , reception aesthetics and film .

Studies and teaching

He had studied Italian as well as French and German, initially for the teaching post at the University of Münster. In 2001 he received his doctorate from the University of Münster. After teaching at the University of Marburg, he taught at the TU Chemnitz between 2001 and 2007, where he completed his habilitation in 2006. Since 2007 he has held a professorship for Romance cultural studies at the University of Regensburg.

His main research interests include 19th and 20th century literature, narratology, literary body representation, entertainment research and contemporary Spanish cinema. He has created monographs with, among others, Pedro Álvarez Olañeta zu Alber Ponte .

As far as teaching methods are concerned, Junkerjürgen has been testing project work, which is little used at German universities in the humanities, since 2011 and has worked with students to translate adventure novels by Louis Boussenard and Jules Verne , which have been published by Ablit-Verlag (Munich). In addition, there were translations of little-known adventure novels by Emilio Salgari and Gabriel Ferry in Germany . His teaching activities include topics such as French films and their American remakes, literary translation and, together with Isabella von Treskow, in the area of ​​social and media analysis of amok , school massacres and excesses of violence.

Entertainment research: tension

In his study Tension - Narrative Procedures of Reader Activation , Junkerjürgen tried to make the results of empirical media psychology fruitful for structuralist text analysis and developed a model of literary tension, the transferability of which he was able to transfer to other popular authors such as Karl May , JRR Tolkien and Joanne K. Rowling checked. This also includes a figure typology, which uses various parameters to describe the fundamental suitability of figures for empathic effects. Junkerjürgen has introduced the term empathic capacity for this . Using the example of the novels Jules Verne, for example, he showed the extent to which the contouring of figures allows or prevents empathy in the (contemporary) reader.

Junkerjürgen is also known for its cultural history of hair colors in Europe since ancient times. Based on the thesis that stereotypes arise from a complex interplay of different factors, he first worked on the traditional lines of hair color interpretation in religious, physiognomic, nationalistic and literary discourses and developed a multi-level explanatory model from this.

The Swiss Tages-Anzeiger requested a cultural-scientific opinion from Junkerjürgens on the short haircut of the Swiss beauty queen Dominique Rinderknecht . Junker Jurgen replied that her haircut was actually an expression of a progressive attitude, “because short hairstyles and female self-determination are closely related. Since the emergence of feminism at the end of the 19th century, the female short hairstyle has symbolized the opposition to a traditional understanding of roles. ”Short hair for women would then go out of fashion and can currently be used innovatively again. Today the hairstyle is no longer specifically an expression of feminism, but of modernity.

Spanish cinema

More recently, Junkerjürgen has turned to Spanish cinema, which has received little attention from German-speaking Hispanic studies after the Second World War, and has published one of the first German-language overview presentations with a collection of individual interpretations. He was also a juror at the Spanish short film festival in Alcalá de Henares and contributed to the Spanish film and culture festival CinEScultura in Regensburg . In 2013 he organized the first awarding of the Premio cinEScultura for a Spanish short film. In this context, research and the festival are closely linked, which is seldom common in German-speaking countries.
