Ralf Scharf (born February 9, 1959 , † July 22, 2013 ) was a German ancient historian who made his appearance primarily through work on late antiquity .

Life

After graduating from secondary school, Scharf completed training as an excavation technician from 1976 to 1979 at the Darmstadt branch of the State Office for Monument Preservation in Hesse . In the following years he worked as an archaeological draftsman at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz until 1982 . At the same time he received his Abitur at the evening grammar school.

In 1982 he began studying ancient history, Egyptology and Protestant theology at the University of Heidelberg , which he later supplemented with a parallel study of provincial Roman archeology at the University of Frankfurt . In 1989 he completed his doctorate at the University of Mannheim under Heinrich Chantraine . His dissertation includes several articles on the 5th century, which, according to Scharf, "deal with more or less important preliminary questions for a planned larger study on the Roman governments of the 5th century in the eastern and western Roman Empire and their politics". However, Scharf later seems to have rejected the plan to write this larger study. Instead, in 1999, he completed his habilitation at the University of Koblenz-Landau with a thesis on the federal government . He then worked as a lecturer at the University of Koblenz-Landau until the summer semester of 2009.
