Ralf Seppelt (* 1969 in Braunschweig ) is a German mathematician and professor of applied landscape ecology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and head of the Computational Landscape Ecology department at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig .

Scientific career

Ralf Seppelt studied applied mathematics at the Technical University of Clausthal-Zellerfeld and received his doctorate in 1997 in the subjects of agroecology and systems analysis at the Technical University of Braunschweig . There he worked from 1997 to 2004 as a research assistant and lecturer at the Institute for Geoecology. After several research stays at the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, Burlington and Maryland , USA, as well as at the CSIRO in Canberra , Australia, he was appointed professor for applied landscape ecology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 2004 as a joint appointment with the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ .

Research activity

As a professor, he teaches Environmental Modeling in Halle . As head of the Landscape Ecology Department at the UFZ, he is responsible for the research topic Land use options of the research program Terrestrial Environment of the Helmholtz Association . In the BMBF's Sustainable Land Management program , he headed the accompanying scientific project Global Assessment of Land Use Dynamics on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Ecosystem Services (GLUES).

Seppelt's research focus is on land resource management based on integrated simulation and modeling systems. He researches the interactions between anthropogenic and biosphere processes. The aim of his work is to determine usage strategies for renewable resources while maintaining ecosystem functions and ecosystem services . This requires methodical developments in landscape ecology such as model integration, hybrid model systems and scales in space and time, which he developed as a mathematician. For example, suitable, sustainable land use and configurations can be identified with optimization processes. In addition to many regional studies on the interactions between ecosystem functions and biodiversity, he also deals with global assessments of resource availability and the diversity of global land use systems.

From 2008 to 2014 he was Vice President of the International Society for Environmental Modeling and Software and until 2017 a member of the Senate Commission for Agro-Ecosystem Research of the German Research Foundation . He is a member of the University Council of the University of Hohenheim . Since 2013, Seppelt has been the spokesman for the Helmholtz Research School ESCALATE ( Ecosystem Services Under Changing Land-Use and Climate ), which supports several doctoral students from various disciplines who research the topics of biodiversity and ecosystem services . He is co-author of the global assessment of the International Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service ( IPBES ).
