Athletic career

Steinfurth began his football career with the company sports community (BSG) Traktor on the island of Riems , later with the BSG KKW Greifswald . At the age of 13 he joined the army sports club FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder in 1979. From 1983 to 1985 he played for FCV in the GDR-wide junior league. In 1984 and 1985 Steinfurth was part of the GDR junior national team, for which he played 14 international matches as a striker and scored one goal.

In the 1984/85 season Steinfurth was officially part of the FCV junior squad, but has already completed 13 point games (two goals) with the 2nd team in the second-rate GDR league , as well as four point games in the major league. For the 1985/86 season, the 1.76 m tall Steinfurth was reported as a striker for the league, but was not used there and instead played 27 of the 34 point games for the 2nd team and scored six goals. 1986/87 he was officially part of the squad of the 2nd team, for which he also completed 15 point games (seven goals), but was also used in the league team, for which the 14 point games completed (one goal). In the next season he was back in the official league squad, for which he played 16 point games (two goals). In addition, Steinfurth was also called up in the 2nd team, where he was on the field in 14 point games (five goals). The FCV ended the 1987/88 season as relegated from the league. In the GDR league Steinfurth was used in twelve point games until the end of 1988 (two goals), then he was dismissed from the army.

He returned to BSG KKW Greifswald, where he played his first league game for Greifswald on April 8, 1989 in the GDR league. By the end of the season he was used in all eleven league games, but scored no goal as a midfielder. In the first half of the 1989/90 season Steinfurth was set as a striker and was there from the 1st to the 16th match day in all point games. Although he played his last game for Greifswald on December 10, 1989, he was the BSG KKW's top scorer at the end of the season with eight goals.

Steinfurth used the borders that had become open as a result of the political change and signed a professional contract with West Berlin's second division club Blau-Weiß 90. There he played for the first time on February 17, 1990 in a Bundesliga match. By the end of the season he played a total of 13 of the 16 second division games played, but was only on the field in one game over the full duration of the game.

For the 1990/91 season Steinfurth returned to Greifswald and to his previous team. The BSG KKW had in the meantime transformed into the Greifswalder SC . The GSC also played this season in the GDR league, which was renamed the NOFV league from November 1990. With Steinfurth, the club reached eleventh place at the end of the season and was then classified in the newly introduced third-class Oberliga Nordost in 1991/92 . In 1994/95 a new regional league was introduced, with which the league became fourth class. At this level Steinfurth ended his football career at the age of 30 after the 1995/96 season at Greifswalder SC.
