Cupriavidus metallidurans is a bacteria - kind from the family of burkholderiaceae . Synonyms names are Ralstonia metallidurans and Wautersia metallidurans . The species epithet metallidurans indicates that this bacterium cansurvivehigh concentrations of heavy metals .

features

They are gram-negative , rod-shaped, unicellular bacteria that occur individually, in pairs, or in short chains. They have a diameter of 0.8  µm and a length of 1.2 to 2.2 µm. They move through peritrichal flagella . On a nutrient medium, they form round, smooth, flat, convex and transparent colonies approx. 0.5 mm in diameter within 24 hours of incubation at 30 ° C. In the air these bacteria multiply between 20 ° C and 37 ° C, but not at 4 ° C and 41 ° C.

Way of life

The reference strain CH34 was first isolated in 1974 in the wastewater of a zinc smelter in Belgium. The bacterium occurs naturally in sediments and in soils with a high heavy metal content and has also been found on gold nuggets .

use

The bacterium is of particular interest because it is able to produce metallic gold from an aqueous gold (III) chloride solution. The mechanisms involved have been developed by Reith et al. a. examined.
