In an interview on prevention Durvasula reported that she started mid-20s to struggle with their weight. After having children, stress caused her to reconcile her career and private life with "comfort" in food. The fellow mothers at her daughter's school, whom she says were generally slim, were rude to her. In preparation for a wedding, she tried on several saris that her mother had brought her from India, but none of them fitted. She tearfully committed to losing weight and began walking daily, smaller portions, and products with each meal. She lost 65 pounds in just over a year.
