Ramward of Minden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ramward (also Ramwardus ) († October 2 or 8, 1002 ) was bishop of Minden from April 18, 996 at the earliest until his death in 1002 .

During his time as bishop, the people of the Minden monastery suffered from famine and the plague , which claimed numerous victims. In the wake of the Slav uprisings of the 10th century , the Liutizen penetrated into the Bardengau , which lay on the northeastern edge of the diocese. Emperor Otto III. had transferred the protection of these areas around Lüneburg to Westphalia , so that Ramward von Minden went into battle against the Liutizen on November 6, 997. He is said to have contributed significantly to the victory of the imperial coalition over the Slavs. Ramward is mentioned as a participant in the negotiations held in Merseburg from July 24th to 28th . Saxon rulers met there to discuss the election of a king in 1002 , which ultimately produced Heinrich II as the new emperor. Ramward moved the later Marienkloster on the Wittekindsberg to Minden and consecrated it to Maria and Blasius .

Ramward probably died on October 2 or 8, 1002. A source reports that Ramward is said to have died only in 1009.
