Evert Verwey

Evert Johannes Willem Verwey , also Verweij, (born April 30, 1905 in Amsterdam , † February 13, 1981 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch chemist who dealt with physical chemistry .

Verwey studied chemistry at the University of Amsterdam , with the diploma (Doctoraal Examen) in 1929. Then he was from 1931 assistant at the University of Groningen , where he received his doctorate cum laude in 1934 with Hugo Rudolph Kruyt (1882-1959). In 1934 he went to the Philips laboratories in Eindhoven . There he dealt with colloids (topic of his dissertation) and with oxidic materials (the Verwey transition in magnetite is named after him). From 1946 to 1967 he was director of the laboratory alongside the physicist Hendrik Casimir and the engineer Herre Rinia .

He is known for the DLVO theory (named after Boris Wladimirowitsch Derjagin , Lew Landau , Verwey, Theodoor Overbeek ) of the interaction of charged surfaces in liquids, for example to describe colloids.

In 1967 he received an honorary doctorate from the TU Delft and in 1949 a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . He was also the curator of Utrecht University.

He was married to the sociologist and social democratic politician Hilda Verwey-Jonker (1908-2004).
