Randolph James "Randy" Bresnik (born September 11, 1967 in Fort Knox , Kentucky , USA ) is an American astronaut .

education

Bresnik received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from The Citadel Military Academy in South Carolina in 1989 and a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 2002 .

In May, Bresnik joined the United States Marine Corps . After completing his training, he was employed as a test pilot and as a pilot instructor, among other things. He also flew several combat missions in the Second Gulf War .

Astronaut activity

In May 2004, Bresnik was selected as a candidate for astronauts as a pilot with the 19th NASA group. In February 2006 he completed his astronaut training.

Bresnik was nominated for the STS-129 space shuttle mission in September 2008 . He took off on November 16, 2009 with the space shuttle Atlantis to the International Space Station (ISS) .

On July 28, 2017, Bresnik took off on its second space flight. Together with Sergei Ryazansky and Paolo Nespoli , he flew to the ISS in the Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft . There he initially worked as a flight engineer for Expedition 52 . On September 2, he took command of Expedition 53 . The return flight to earth took place on December 14, 2017.

Private

Bresnik's daughter Abigail Mae was born on November 21, 2009 while he was in space. This marked the second time a NASA astronaut had been in space at the time of his child's birth , following the birth of Mike Fincke's daughter in June 2004. Bresnik and his wife Rebecca have a son whom they adopted as an infant from Ukraine the year before .
