The Ranelva is a 130 km long river in the municipality of Rana, making it one of the longest rivers in the Norwegian province of Nordland . The river has its origin in Gubbeltåga in Saltfjell , and Randalselv ( Sami : Goabdesjåhkå ) on the border between Norway and Sweden . The actual Ranelva begins at the confluence of the Randalselva and Gubbeltåga . The river flows mainly in a west-southwest direction.

On its way to the southwest, the river takes the Virvasselva from the south. This section of the river has the Sami name Ruovadajåhkå .

At Storvoll , the rivers Bjøllåga , Tespa and Stormdalsåga flow into the Ranelva from the north, and the Messingåga from the south. The river continues on its way in a south-westerly direction through the valley Dunderlandsdal , where the rivers Grønfjellåga and Plura flow into it.

To the southwest of the small settlement Røssvoll , the Langvassåga river , which drains the Langvatnet lake, flows into the Ranelva. The Ranelva flows into the eastern end of the Ranfjord at Selfors near Mo i Rana .

The catchment area of the river is 3790 km². Before the Reinforsen (1925) and Langvatnet (1964) hydropower plants were built , this was as much as 3843 km².

The European route 6 follows the course of the river from the Arctic Circle to its mouth at Mo i Rana .

The Ranelva is popular with anglers. The river is rich in salmon and trout . One of the largest salmon tunnels in Norway (385 m long, built in 1956) is located at the Reinforsen waterfall . The river below the Sjøforsen waterfall was treated with Rotenone in 1996, 2004 and 2005 to control the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris , which first appeared in the river in 1975.
