Rangiahua is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement, consisting of a few houses, is located around 18 km northwest of Kaikohe , east of the marshland of the Waihou River , which is a tributary of Hokianga Harbor . The Waipapa River flows through the settlement and joins the Waihou River 2 km further west . The New Zealand State Highway 1 , which connects the settlement with Kawakawa , around 40 km further south-east , also runs through Rangiahua .

history

Rangiahua would almost have become New Zealand's northernmost railway terminus. In 1923 the Okaihau Line , a branch line from Otiria to the North Auckland Line, was opened and work began on an extension to Hokianga Harbor and Kaitaia . However, the profitability of the route was controversial. A compromise was found to make Rangiahua the end point. Work progressed slowly in the 1920s and stopped during the Great Depression , although the route was nearing completion. New Zealand's northernmost rail tunnel was completed and the marshalling yard and platform in Rangiahua built. In 1936 there was an investigation into the future viability of the line, which came to the conclusion that an extension via Rangiahua was not economical. The rails and railway equipment were dismantled in 1938 for use in other locations.
