Raphael of Brooklyn ( Arabic سان رافائيل من بروكلين, born as Raphael Hawaweeny Arabic رفائيل هواويني, Russian Рафаил (Хававини) ; * November 20, 1860 in Beirut , Lebanon , Ottoman Empire ; † February 27, 1915 in Brooklyn , United States ) was Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church , Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, Vicar of the North American Diocese, and head of the Syro-Arab Orthodox Mission. He was the first Orthodox bishop to be consecrated in America .

Life

Hawaweeny was born in Beirut (now Lebanon ). His parents were Damascus Syrians who fled to Beirut after a massacre in the Lebanon Mountains during the civil war . He began his education at the Patriarchal School in Damascus , then the leading Greek Orthodox institution for higher education in the Levant under the direction of Joseph of Damascus (1793-1860), and continued his studies at the Seminary of Chalki of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in the then Ottoman Empire and then at the Spiritual Academy in Kiev in the then Russian Empire .

Raphael was sent as a priest to New York City by Tsar Nicholas II in 1895 to provide pastoral care to the local Orthodox Christians . The community at that time consisted mostly of Russian and Levantine immigrants.

In 1904 he was ordained as the first Orthodox bishop in North America . The consecration took place in New York by Archbishop Tichon and Bishop Innocent (Pustynsky) . He served as the Bishop of Brooklyn until his death.

During his tenure as Auxiliary Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church in America, he founded the Cathedral of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America , installed 29 parishes and supported the establishment of St. Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery .

He also worked as an editor and in 1905 founded the journal of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese, The Word ( Arabic الكلمة, DMG al Kalimah ).

Honors and canonization

"Saint Raphael" was originally buried in New York. In August 1989, his remains were transferred to the Antiochian Village Camp in Ligonier, Pennsylvania . There he was buried on the grounds of the Archdiocese of Antioch with other bishops and clergy.

He was canonized by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) in 2000 . His public holiday is February 27th, the day of his death. The Antiochian Orthodox Church celebrates its feast on the first Saturday in November.

In 2015 the Archdiocese of Antioch, the OCA and the Russian Orthodox Church abroad celebrated the 100th anniversary of the "Dormition" of St. Raphael.
