The Raschplatzhochstraße in Hanover , also called Raschplatz-Hochstraße and Raschplatzhochbrücke , is an elevated road in the course of the so-called " Raschplatz - Tangente " and the inner city ring of the Lower Saxony state capital. The bridge for automobile traffic on the border of the Oststadt and Mitte districts connects Berliner Allee with Hamburger Allee and relieves traffic, especially at the intersection with Lister Meile .

The 17 meter wide reinforced concrete structure is 520 meters long and consists of two 110 meter long ramps and a 410 meter long bridge structure. Two lanes lead over the bridge in each direction, with around 30,000 vehicles (in 2004) in 24 hours, it is a part of the inner city ring that is heavily used in terms of traffic.

The elevated road was built in 1968 and 1969 and opened to traffic on July 30, 1970. Around the year 2000, discussions arose as to whether the bridge should be demolished. Instead of demolishing it for around 13 million euros, the city of Hanover had the bridge renovated between 2014 and 2015 for 3.5 million euros.

At the crossing of the Lister Meile, under the elevated road on a larger traffic island, there has been a construction trailer since 1988 , in which the Christian Addiction Aid New Land operates a contact café as a low-threshold contact point for drug addicts , the homeless and the needy. In 1995 three containers were added.

Arts

In 1991, the sculptor Andreas von Weizsäcker exhibited his sculpture Hangover under Hochstraße , which was initially only exhibited for a limited period and later on permanently. There are three car bodies hanging upside down and wrapped in paper. According to the city's cultural office, the sculpture looks like an ironic memorial to the concept of the car-friendly city that was implemented in Hanover.

In the run-up to the renovation of the dreary gray bridge structure carried out in 2014 and 2015 , the pop-art artist Andora opened his proposals to the city for a color redesign of the Raschplatzhochstraße with citizen participation into a colorful work of art in public space . The plans were not implemented due to security concerns and additional costs.

In 2021, the 10-day Theaterformen festival took place on Hochstrasse in conjunction with a city laboratory on climate justice . Due to the events, the road was closed to traffic for three weeks, which caused displeasure among motorists due to the resulting traffic jams.
