Stasys Raštikis (born September 13, 1896 in Kuršėnai ; † May 3, 1985 in Los Angeles ) was a Lithuanian division general , chief of staff or commander of the Lithuanian armed forces (1935-1940) and a publicist.

Life

In 1915, Stasys Raštikis became a volunteer in the Russian army . In 1917 he graduated from the Tbilisi Military School and returned to Lithuania in 1918, where he volunteered in the Lithuanian army in 1919 and took part in battles against the Bolsheviks .

1925-1929 he studied at the University of Kaunas and later at the Military Academy in Germany.

In 1926, Stasys Raštikis headed the intelligence department of the General Staff. In 1934 he was appointed chief of staff. In 1937 he was promoted to brigadier general. From January 1, 1935 to March 22, 1940 Stasys Raštikis was the commander of the Lithuanian armed forces. From March 24, 1938 to December 5, 1938, Stasys Raštikis was also Minister of Defense , and in 1940 head of the Vytautas Magnus Military Academy .

In 1941 he emigrated to Germany and in 1949 to the USA . Stasys Raštikis worked as a journalist and publicist for Lithuanian exile newspapers such as "Karo archyvas", "Mūsų žinynas", "Karys", "Trimitas", "Lietuvių archyvas", "Dirva", "Tėvynės sargas".

He died on May 3, 1985 in Los Angeles. In 1993 his body was reburied in Kaunas .
