On October 1, 1906, the new mayor's office Kray-Leithe emerged from the former mayor's office in Stoppenberg , which was divided at the request of the district president. The Krayer Town Hall is one of the ten best-preserved Art Nouveau administrative buildings in Germany and can be seen as a representative example of the government building style of the late imperial era . The two-storey, two- wing plastered building is dominated by an originally slate-roofed tower with a bell-like dome and the high gable of the hall building in the left wing of the building, adorned in the upper corner by the oversized relief of an imperial eagle from the German Empire . The coat of arms of the mayor's office of Kray-Leithe was embedded in a lead-glazed window. The main entrance, which can be reached via a flight of stairs, is located in the tower . A park-like green area forms the forecourt.

The design of the administration building was selected from 89 proposals in an architectural competition. The building was erected in 1907 and 1908 under the direction of the architect Otto Mecke from Metz . The foundation stone was laid on July 3, 1907. On October 1, 1908, the new Krayer Town Hall on Osterfeldstrasse, which today bears the name Kamblickweg, was opened under Mayor Ludwig Kohlen and the councilors August Schulte-Ising and Wilhelm Beckmann.

Since 1985 the Krayer Town Hall including the outdoor facilities has been a listed building . In 1989 the mayor's house, which was built at the same time in a similar style opposite the town hall, was listed as a historical monument.

After the Second World War

Due to severe war damage to the neo-Gothic Essen town hall , the constituent meeting of the city council after the Second World War had to be held on February 6, 1946 in the undamaged Krayer town hall. Six women and 54 men who had been appointed by the occupying power gathered in the meeting room of the Krayer town hall.

After the old Essen town hall had already been rebuilt, it was demolished in 1964. In the period from 1964 to 1979, i.e. until the opening of today's Essen Town Hall on Porscheplatz, the city of Essen did not have a corresponding building for 15 years. The old town hall of the formerly independent town of Kray was temporarily used.

Condition and use today

The Krayer town hall suffered no war damage, which is why the original windows and doors have largely been preserved. Inside there are also tiles in Art Nouveau décor, wrought-iron banisters, carved wall paneling and original furniture in the former mayor's office.

Today the south-east police station is housed in the Krayer town hall and, since 1997, a branch office of the Essen registry office, which carries out marriages several times a month in the historic building. Since the meeting room of the town hall is used as the wedding room, the location is also suitable for large parties.

The council chamber, in which the meetings of District Representation VII are also held, was renovated in 2004. The building also houses a district library, a branch of the Essen youth welfare office and the legal office for expellees and repatriates.
