description
Vegetative characteristics
The rough marshmallow grows as an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The leaf and flower stalks are covered with long, stiff bristle hairs ( indument ). The upper stalk leaves are three to five lobed up to the base and the middle stalk leaves palmate with three to five columns.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from May to August. The flowers stand individually in the leaf axils and their stalks are longer than the bracts . The hermaphroditic flowers are five-fold and with a diameter of about 2.5 centimeters, radial symmetry . The outer sepals are 6 to 9 millimeters long and fused at the base. The five sepals are pointed. The five pink to pale lilac petals are 12 to 17 millimeters long and barely longer than the sepals.
The partial fruits are bare and wrinkled on the back.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 50.
Occurrence
The original distribution area of the rough marshmallow is the Mediterranean area . In Central Europe it is only introduced and mostly unstable. In Central Europe it occurs sporadically in the Eifel , the Palatinate , in the Swabian-Franconian Muschelkalkgebiet , on the Baar , in Thuringia , in warmer areas of Switzerland , in Lower Austria , in Burgenland and in eastern Styria .
The rough marshmallow thrives best on calcareous loam or clay soils in locations with warm summers. He colonizes wasteland and root crop fields . It occurs mainly in societies of the Fumario-Euphorbion association, but can also be found in societies of the Caucalidion or Sisymbrion associations.
Taxonomy
Althaea hirsuta was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné . A synonym for Althaea hirsuta L. is Dinacrusa hirsuta (L.) G.Krebs .
