Ray Austin (musician)

Raymond Hugh Austin (born February 17, 1943 in Thorne , Great Britain) is a British-German musician (guitar, trumpet, vocals, harmonica).

The English jazz -, folk - and blues musician grew up as the son of a teacher in Halifax in the county of Yorkshire on. After completing his training, he worked as a caramel representative at Jon's Toffee , after which he served in the British Army . After attending McMillan College of Education , he taught English and art at an English school. In 1970 he came to Freiburg im Breisgau and received there at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitya teaching position for "Modern English", but since 1973 has only devoted himself to music. From 1972 to 1977 he went on tour as a musician. After his marriage in 1978, he and his wife ran the music and cabaret “Halifax” in Gottenheim in Baden until 1980 . From 1981 he hosted the program Music-Hall for several years at Südwestfunk . In 1985 he was one of the founding members of the Freiburger Jazzhaus e. V. Since 1999 he has been the musical director of the Wodan Hall in Freiburg, of which he was co-founder in 1998.

Since the age of 27, Ray Austin has dedicated himself to music as a solo artist, in bands, as an organizer of smaller music festivals and as the founder of folk & blues clubs all over Germany (e.g. in Freiburg).

He leads the Dixieland bands Royal Garden Five and Original Hallelujah Stompers and the country / folk / blues group Ray Austin & Friends.
