Raymond George "Ray" Hanken (born December 3, 1911 in Oelwein , Iowa , † November 29, 1980 in Vienna , West Virginia ) was an American American football player and coach. He played End in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants .

Player career

Ray Hanken attended high school in his hometown and studied after graduating from 1934 to 1936 at George Washington University . He played football for the George Washington Colonials in college . In his final year he was the team captain of the Colonials. His college recognized him for all three years of study for his athletic performance. After graduating, Hanken joined the New York Giants, overseen by Steve Owen , in 1937 . Owen put Hanken in the team's offense as the end. He was one of the starting points for quarterback Ed Danowski . In 1938 the Giants were able to win eight of eleven games in the regular season and moved with this performance in the NFL final against the Green Bay Packers supervised by Curly Lambeau . The Giants were able to prevail in the final with 23:17. Hanken received a prize of 900 US dollars for this championship win and was also elected to the Pro Bowl that year .

Coaching career

After the 1938 season, Hanken returned to his old college and became a football coach. From 1943 to 1946 he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II . After completing his military service, he continued his coaching career at George Washington University. In 1957 he was an assistant coach with his team in the Sun Bowl . Opponent in this game was the team of the University of Texas at El Paso , which could be beaten 13-0. Raymond Hanken was inducted into the George Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 . He died in 1980 and is buried in Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper , Virginia .
