Raymond Arthur Palmer , also Ray Alfred or Ray Palmer (born August 1, 1910 Milwaukee , † August 15, 1977 Portage , Wisconsin ), was an influential American writer and editor of science fiction .

Between 1938 and 1949 he edited Amazing Stories , then brought out Fate magazine, as well as Mystic , Search and Flying Saucers . He also published various works on spiritualism such as Oahspe. A New Bible and about UFOs like The Coming of the Saucers (together with Kenneth Arnold ). Palmer continued to write numerous stories in the fantasy and science fiction genre, which often appeared under pseudonyms .

In addition to Hugo Gernsback , Palmer created one of the first SF fan clubs, the Science Correspondence Club , whose first event took place in early 1930. The magazine The Comet , later renamed Cosmology , served as the club organ .

In the 1940s he supported Richard Sharpe Shaver's dubious theses , which became known as Shaverism , which provoked the sharp criticism of Forrest J. Ackerman , who saw it as a general damage to the genre of science fiction.
