Burke came from a musical family, but was self-taught ; except for a brief period in Kansas City in the late 1930s, he spent his career in the New Orleans music scene. At first he played on the kazoo . He began working as a professional musician around 1920, playing with Blind Gilbert in the mid-1920s and with Henry Waldes Melon Pickers in the 1930s . In the following years he was a member of Sharkey Bonano , Johnny Wiggs , George Hartman, Wooden Joe Nicholas , Dukes of Dixieland , George Girard , Johnny St. Cyr and Kid Thomas Valentine . Occasionally Burke also led his own formations, with which he had appearances in the Preservation Hall from 1960 . In 1960 he joined Punch Miller's band . He remained active until the mid-1980s. The title Solitude was created under his own name in 1937 ; This was followed by a number of albums for the labels New Orleans Records (1949), Paramount (1952), Southland (1953 & 1960), Land O 'Jazz (1975), 504 (1979) and Smoky Mary (1983).
