history

The former Katharinenkloster, drawing by Daniel Feuerbach, 1734

Headmaster Heinrich Graefe opened a citizens' school in the old town of Bremen in the Katharinenkloster in 1855 . Up until 1820 the building housed the gymnasium and then the state library. Building director Alexander Schröder had the building extended from 1853 to 1855 according to his plans. The school was always very cramped with initially seven rooms, then a few more. It initially had 5 grades, i.e. 5th to 9th grade. The 10th grade was formed in 1857. Each year had two classes.

In 1868, after Graefe's death, the Senate decided that the school was renamed by the state and, following the Prussian model, as Realschule , which designated such schools as Second Order Realschule . In 1868 the botanist Professor Dr. Franz Buchenau as the new head of the school. The first foreign language was now English; French was taught from the tertiary, i.e. from the 8th grade. Important subjects were German, arithmetic (from upper level mathematics), natural sciences and geography. In 1870 French became the first foreign language and English began in the fourth grade (7th grade).

In 1896/97 the library moved to its new library building on Breitenweg and the space problems could be eliminated through the subsequent renovations. In 1898/99 the Debbesche School , which had been private until then , Christoffer Wessel Debbe's secondary school, was incorporated into the state secondary school in the old town. From 1937, the secondary schools in Bremen were generally referred to as secondary schools.

The school building was destroyed in World War II and the school ceased to exist.
