Red Hill is an Australian neo-Western by Patrick Hughes from the year 2010 . The location was the small town of Omeo in the Australian state of Victoria. The thriller, peppered with mystery elements, premiered on February 14, 2010 at the Berlinale.

action

Young police officer Shane Cooper moves to remote Red Hill to save his pregnant wife from another miscarriage. The hustle and bustle of the big city had become her undoing. But even his first day at work is unexpectedly turbulent. An escaped inmate, Jimmy Conway, greatly feared in Red Hill, is suspected to be in the area. Sheriff Bill hurriedly rounds up a search party of police officers and civilian volunteers. After a briefing everyone goes to his post armed. Cooper sits alone at his checkpoint when Conway, convicted of murder, tries to cross the street. Because of his humane attitude, Cooper is unable to shoot a human, which has already proven problematic in his past. The wanted criminal can penetrate to the city center, where he tracks down everyone from the search party in his hiding place and kills them mercilessly. Conway can overhear the search team's radio without using a radio. Resistance shots at Conway ricochet off him like raindrops. He seems to have psychic abilities. He spared z. B. Cooper several times because he is aware of his social commitment and because he senses that Cooper will soon be a father.

As agreed, Cooper goes to a certain barn, which is to be visited as soon as the men no longer know what to do. There the sheriff prevents him from calling for assistance from the next town. The loyal Cooper is unwilling to obey this instruction, so he is left handcuffed in the barn. Meanwhile, the other men continue on the hunt for Conway.

Cooper manages to break free and makes his way to Gleason Farm to request help. Gleason is about to hang himself. In his pants he wears a letter he wrote himself describing the events that sparked Jimmy's vengeance campaign. Conway is an Aboriginal and prevented the construction of a railway line through the mountains 15 years earlier. Bill, who was interested in an economic upswing, took revenge by kidnapping and murdering Conway's pregnant wife with some men.

Conway kills his remaining enemies on a farm while the reinforcements Cooper requested approaches. Since Conway was able to successfully end his campaign of revenge, he is now vulnerable again. Conway dies in a hail of bullets.

criticism

“Red Hill is visually and acoustically breathtaking […], which is one of the main reasons for the dense atmosphere. Although we are largely spared really disgusting scenes of violence, the film envelops a mysterious and at times also creepy aura. The minimal plot and the resulting lengths unfortunately cloud the overall picture a bit. […] The special peculiarity of the films from Australia […] make Red Hill absolutely worth seeing despite the shortcomings mentioned, especially since the film can clearly stand out from the usual monotony.
