During a mission on the Amalfi Coast , the trio around Darius Kincaid, his wife Sonia and Michael Bryce have to save the future of Europe and stop a fanatic with national pride.

production

After Killer's Bodyguard had grossed more than 180 million US dollars worldwide on a budget of around 30 million US dollars, a sequel entitled The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard was promoted by the production company Millennium Films as part of the 2018 Cannes International Film Festival . At the same time Tom O'Connor was announced again as the screenwriter of the film, after he had already written the first part. In November of the same year, Lionsgate secured the US distribution rights, while Millennium Films will market the sequel worldwide. It also announced the return of Patrick Hughes in the director's chair and Ryan Reynolds , Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek in their familiar roles. Furthermore act Les Weldon and Matthew O'Toole as producers. In March 2019, Frank Grillo , Morgan Freeman , Tom Hopper , Antonio Banderas and Richard E. Grant finally joined the cast.

Filming began on March 3, 2019 in London . Terry Stacey acted as cameraman . In early April 2019, filming began in the port city of Rovinj in Croatia , which served as a backdrop for an Italian city. Before that, a Croatian agency was commissioned to put together proposals for locations in Croatia, Italy, Slovenia and Serbia. A part of the production team then visited large parts of Croatia, including the islands of Vis , Biševo and Hvar , a few places in Slovenia and the region around Trieste , Italy , before Croatia was finally chosen as the filming location. This was followed by recordings in Zagreb and Karlovac , in Pisarovina for eleven days, in the port city of Rijeka for seven days, where only the second unit was filming, in Motovun on the Mirna for ten days, on the Limski Canal for five days, in Buje for two days and on Bisevo and in Vodnjan for one day each. The 49-day production in Croatia was carried out through regional funding programs including tax cuts of up to 30%, for which in return over 220 filmmakers and a further 760 extras from the region were employed. Some of these Croatian crew members were also previously involved in filming in London. Large parts of the equipment also came from Croatia, and further equipment was obtained from the Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia . Additional recordings were reportedly made in Italy , Bulgaria and the Netherlands . Filming was completed on May 24, 2019.

The film was originally scheduled to release in US cinemas on August 28, 2020. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , however, the US launch date was later postponed by one year to August 20, 2021. An official movie poster was released by Hayek on June 10, 2020.
